Outremeuse: heritage and folklore (GR008)
Presentation
This old neighbourhood of Liège, located on the right bank, lay within the second walls built in the 13th century. Outremeuse's development can be traced back to the construction of the first bridge, the Pont des Arches (late 11th century), linking the right bank of the river Meuse to the centre. It was the only bridge spanning the river until the 19th century, when the district underwent a true demographic and town planning explosion. Today, wide avenues brimming with Art Nouveau contrast with the medieval narrow lanes and culs-de-sac. An area of tanners and manual workers, Outremeuse is a sanctuary for the city's folklore and is also the birthplace of Tchantchès, the hero of Liège's puppet theatre.
